Facebook Announces 2011 Hacker Cup

Hacking is a central part of Facebook’s culture–or so the social networking site said in announcing its 2011 Hacker Cup, where contestants will have to successfully solve algorithmic-based problem statements to advance and are ranked by accuracy and speed.

The annual contest is open to hackers from around the world, with registration opening Dec. 20. Three rounds will take place online throughout January 2011, with the finals being held at Facebook’s Palo Alto, Calif.-based headquarters.

The “top hacker” will win $5,000 and the title world champion. Second place gets $2,000, third place $1,000, and $100 for fourth through 25th place. The top 300 hackers from the second online round will win T-shirts.

“Many will enter, but only one will claim title as champion and take home the $5,000 USD cash prize and be immortalized on the Hacker Cup,” Facebook said.
