Mobile Devices, Virtualization Are Biggest Security Challenges

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcmetroblogger/4052573767/
Increased use of mobile devices, especially smartphones, in addition to the transition to virtualization, are key factors weighing on enterprises trying to sort out security strategy and budgets, according to a survey of 688 information and security managers.

According to the Ponemon Institute's "State of the Endpoint" study released this week, there are serious signs that IT operations and IT security often fail to work as a team. Forty percent say collaboration is "poor or non-existent" and 48% call it "adequate, but can be improved." Virtualization, mainly VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V, are increasingly the software platforms their organizations support, and 55% say virtualization does require "additional security measures," with most turning for help with that to the virtualization vendor or vendors with specialized virtualization security components.

But a surprising 41% indicated responsibility for virtualization security isn't clearly defined by department or function. Additionally, 21% said IT security was responsible, 15% said IT operations was and 11% said it was the job for IT compliance. Mobile devices - especially the use of employee-owned devices for work purposes - are also putting new stress on the IT department, according to the survey, which was sponsored by Lumension. The survey shows that mobile devices, especially smartphones, are counted as among "the greatest rise of potential IT security risk."

Two top Indian mobile companies under investigation

http://www.flickr.com/photos/42429527@N03/4890115442/
India's top investigation agency has registered a case against two major Indian mobile operators and former government officials in connection with alleged irregularities in the allocation of additional 2G spectrum in January 2002, widening the scope of its investigations into alleged scams in India's telecom sector.
The offices of the two mobile operators, Bharti Airtel, India's largest mobile operator, and Vodafone India, were also raided by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday, according to sources.
Vodafone confirmed in a statement that CBI officials had visited the company's offices in Mumbai and Delhi "seeking information related to the spectrum allocation to operators during 2001-02." Airtel was not immediately available for comment. The CBI has been investigating the alleged irregular allocation of spectrum and licenses by the government in 2008, which has led to the arrest of a former communications minister A. Raja, a member of Parliament, business executives, and government officials.

How to Hack Symbian S60 Phones to Install Unsigned Applications

Hack Symbian S60 PhonesIf you own a Nokia Symbian S60 phone, you will most likely be aware of the fact that it is not possible to install applications on it unless they are signed using a valid certificate. Have you been trying to install applications on your S60 3rd or 5th edition phone but ending up getting a certificate error? At times, this can be really annoying; but here is a smart solution to this problem!
Here in this post, I will show you how to hack your Symbian S60 3rd or 5th edition smartphone, so as to modify the phone’s firmware and completely bypass the mandatory signing requirement. So, once you are done with this one time hack, you should be able to install any compatible application including unsigned and those with an expired certificate.

What is the Need for Signing Applications?
From the 3rd edition onwards, all the Symbian S60 applications need to be signed in order to ensure their integrity, so that it would not be possible for a third party to tamper with the application. Also, signing ensures that you always install applications from a trusted source.
However, there are many freeware and beta applications that come unsigned as the developers cannot afford to buy a symbian certificate. Hence, it can be a real nightmare for the users who need to install such applications on their phones. So, here is a step-by-step procedure to hack your phone and permanently disable this security feature.

1. Download HelloOX2 V2.03 or the latest version from the HelloOX2 Ofiicial Website.
HelloOX2 is an excellent tool to hack Symbian S60 3rd, 5th and Symbian^3 smartphones which makes it possible to install a root certificate by gaining full access to the phone’s system files. With this capability, you can install anything you want on your phones without the need to worry about the annoying certificate error!
2. The signed version of HelloOX2 demands for a donation and hence, only the unsigned version is available for free download. So, if you have the unsigned version, you need to sign it before installing on your phone. In order to sign any application, you need to have the certificate and the key file which can be obtained as follows:
  • Go to the OPDA Website, get registered and login to your account.
  • Click on the “Apply Certificate” tab, enter the model number and the IMEI of your phone and then click on “Submit and Upload” button.
  • It will usually take up 24 hours for your certificate and key file to be generated and uploaded. To check the status of your certificate click on “My Certificate” tab. If the certificate is ready for the download you will see something as follows:
OPDA Certificate Status

  • Download the certificate and the key file on to your computer. Also download the SisSigner tool to sign your HelloOX2 application.
  • Open the SisSigner, load the HelloOX2.sis, certificate and the key file as shown below and click on “Sign”. Leave the “Key File Password” field blank.
SisSigner

  • Your HelloOX2 application is now signed and ready for the installation.
3. Install the signed HelloOX2 application on your phone and run it to start the hacking process, which is completely automatic. Within a minute your phone will be hacked. Once this is done, say goodbye to the annoying certificate error and install any application.

I hope you like this post. Express your opinion through comments. Enjoy!!!

Genuine IMEI Implant Program – Frequently Asked Questions

Mobile phones without an original IMEI number were got blocked on December 1st, 2009. Cell phones bearing an invalid, fake or duplicate IMEI numbers will get no network coverage and their mobile phone will not receive operator signal. However, using the GII program users can implant a new IMEI number and get their phone working. But since not many users are familiar with GII program, here is the answers to few frequently asked questions.

GII program

What is an IMEI number ?
IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity, is a unique 15 digit number implanted in mobile handsets. Every mobile handset in the world carries a unique IMEI number.

Why IMEI is required ?
IMEI helps mobile service operators in identifying a handset from it’s IMEI number. It can be compared with a vehicle number, PAN card or social security number.

How can I check the IMEI number of my Handset ?
Press *#06# keys on your mobile handset and it will display a 15 digit number and that is your unique IMEI number.

Why will they block a handset with invalid IMEI number ?
Mobile phones with invalid, fake, duplicate or spurious IMEI numbers, pose threat to National security. TRAI (Telephone Regulatory Authority of India) has ordered all the mobile operators not to allow calls to be processed on handsets without valid IMEI numbers.Your handset will not work with any network as your handset has an invalid IMEI number.

Can I change my service provider/SIM card to solve this problem ?
Not exactly. Since IMEI is a handset feature and by changing the service provider or SIM card, the problem will not be solved .
How can I change my handset IMEI number ?
You can implant a new IMEI number at authorized GII service centers. There are more than 1600 outlets have been opened in India.
Where should I go to get a genuine IMEI number ?
You should only and only visit authorized GII service centres recognized by COAI & MSAI. Getting a new IMEI number implanted at any unauthorized service center will not solve your problem.

How to check if blocked handset has been implanted by the authorized GII center with a genuine IMEI number or not ?
You can verify IMEI validity status by sending a SMS.

What documents do I need to carry in order to change my IMEI number ?
You need to carry ID proof. (Ex: Voter ID Card, Drivers Licences, etc). Your photograph will be captured at the authorized GII service centre, at no extra cost, apart from Rs. 199/-

How much time will it take to change the IMEI number ?
The whole process takes about 10 – 30 minutes.

Block Stolen Mobile Phones Using IMEI Number

IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identification. All mobile handsets are assigned unique IMEI numbers and no two mobile handsets share the same IMEI number, even by mistake! You can find your mobile handset’s IMEI number by typing *#06# on your mobile. Since this number is unique, it will help us in locating your lost or stolen mobile handset. For now, note down this IMEI number and keep in a safe place. You can also find your mobile IMEI number on your mobile handset packet cover.

How to block your lost or stolen mobile handset using IMEI number

Block or disable mobile phone handsets using IMEI number
When you switch on our mobile phone, your mobile SIM card tries to connect with any available network. Once it finds a supported network it tries to build a network connection between your mobile handset and the nearest tower. During this connection negotiation, your SIM transfers some internal information to the network operator such as your mobile IMEI number, mobile model, version etc. This means your mobile operator keeps the record of your mobile handset number each time you try to switch on your mobile handset and use their service.
Now if you have lost your mobile handset or your phone has been stolen, you can contact your network provider to block your IMEI number. They might ask you to get a Police FIR copy first, do as they say and finally ask them to block your IMEI number. Mobile network providers use a shared hosting service for blocking IMEI numbers, which means if you have asked network ‘Airtel’ to block your mobile handset, it automatically gets blocked by network ‘VodaFone’, ‘Reliance’, ‘Idea Cellular’ and so on.
Now when that thief will switch on your mobile handset, no service providers will allow it to build any connection with them. It does not matter if he changes the mobile SIM card, since SIM card requests for the service with IMEI number and a blocked IMEI number handset will be ignored and the mobile will become an useless toy.

If you know someone from any mobile network, you can also ask him to find out the mobile number that’s being used that IMEI number. In that way you will get the mobile number that thief is using on your handset ;) Take help of mobile number tracker to track any mobile number in India.

You can find more information about your mobile handset by entering your mobile IMEI no. Go to IMEI Number Analysis and know more about your handset model, manufacturing date and some internal informations for free.

100 would be the Maximum Number of SMS you can Send Each Day

Beginning September 27, you will not be able to send more than 100 SMS in one day. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced Per Day Per Sim (PDPS) rule under which telecom service providers have been asked to withdraw their SMS service packs that allow customers to send over 100 SMS per day. According to TRAI, the move is aimed at preventing telemarketers from bombarding your mobile with unwanted calls and SMS.

TRAI's latest move will certainly prompt mobile users to make phone calls instead of sending SMS. Withdrawal of SMS service packs will also hit the pockets of users who get unlimited free SMS by paying nearly Rs. 100 monthly. However, TRAI believes the capping SMS will be the best way to protect the interests of customers. "In case of prepaid users, you can monitor it on a day-today basis but for postpaid customers , you will look at the number at the end of the month," TOI quotes Rajan S Mathews , director general of COAI.

The SMS cap comes weeks after TRAI ruled that telemarketers cannot call subscribers registered with the National Do Not Call Registery between 9am to 9pm. Telemarketers cannot call subscribers, who have registered under the “fully blocked'” category. However, telecom regulator has allowed users to access information on selected sectors such as sports, real estate and consumer goods.

Short messages are particularly popular among the youth. Presently, all the telecom companies offer SMS service packs, which allow users to send more than 100 SMS daily. These SMS packs are popular for their ultra low prices, which are under Rs. 100. Restriction is likely to disappoint a number of mobile users, especially those who cannot afford smartphones such as BlackBerry.

Chit Chat for Facebook now available for the Blackberry

Chit Chat for Facebook is one of the most widely used Facebook Instant Messaging (IM) applications available today because of its functionality, reliability, and committed technical development. Until now, Blackberry users have had to cope with inefficient basic Facebook apps or use the unreliable Facebook site itself to IM in real-time with contacts. But this is about to change.
A new mobile version of Chit Chat for Facebook has been developed and is now available for Blackberry smart phones.
The overall colour scheme for Chit Chat is lively and vibrant. This is a welcome change from the monotonous blue and white offering Facebook provides. Chit Chat’s multicolour display means messages and sections are easily identifiable. This is very handy for a small Blackberry display.

The ability to segregate received/ sent messages into self-contained ‘bubbles’ is another welcome feature. Again, this makes it easy to keep track of conversations and quickly distinguish who said what. Add Chit Chat’s ability to adjust font size and colour settings, plus the option to alter background colours and this new mobile version proves to be a very functional IM package.

Chit Chat for Facebook offers Blackberry users the chance to converse quickly and effectively with Facebook contacts. There is no need to log in to the notoriously slow Facebook site and then zoom in to see if you have any messages or if any contacts are online.

Tip to Trace Any Phone Number in the World

Sometimes we cannot even identify which country the missed call is from (except ofcourse the ones from our home country and a few others for which we know the international dialing code). Then how do we find it?

Centralized database

There is a centralized database which has the following details about almost every phone number in the world.
  1. Type of Number
  2. Country
  3. City / State / Exchange location
  4. Original Network Provider

1. Type of Number

This specifies whether the number is a Mobile number or a Landline/Fixed line referred as Geographic number. There is also a type of number called NonGeographic Number in countries like UK which is not linked to any specific location/city.

2. Country

It is the country the number belongs to.

3. City / State / Exchange location

This gives the city and exchange location information for a fixed line phone and the zone or state for a mobile number.

4. Original Network Provider

This is the actual telecom company providing the service like Airtel, BSNL, Verizon, T-Mobile etc. But network provider listed here may not be the present network/service provider because Number Portability is not taken into account.

How can you use this service?

To use this service go to this page and enter the number in the international format.
+
Eg. +12532532533 or +923335721248
For fixed line phones, enter as follows:
+
Eg. +914422102210

You can also use 00 instead of + .

How To Unlock Samsung Galaxy S 2

If you are one of those who bought Samsung Galaxy S II and now you are facing problems with changing your SIM card then this article is for you.

So all those who have been waiting to unlock their Galaxy S II XDA-developers have managed to come up with the Galaxy S II SIM Unlocker that can let you free your phone locked state to allow you to use any SIM card you want in the phone.
The app is very simple to use, simply install the app, hit the “SIM unlock code” button, wait a few minutes, and it should come up with the code. It can indeed take a while, so plug your phone in the charger before running.
The app exploits the Samsung’s habit of storing  SIM unlock codes in the firmware. So what the app does is that it searches your phone for its SIM unlock code. Then all you need to do is to note it down and then place the SIM card you would like to use in the phone, simply enter the unlock code when asked for.

However like with most of the third-party apps trying to give you full control of your device this one also requires Rooting your device prior to its use.

Read out this post about Rooting Your Android device before you decide to Root it

Android App FaceNiff is the “FireSheep for Android

Using WiFi became a little more risky once FireSheep was introduced, a simplified way to snatch authentication info out of wireless packets, and a few big companies (Facebook, Twitter) responded by enabling HTTPS-by-default settings to mitigate the problem. The next incarnation of this threat has made its way to Android smartphones through an app called FaceNiff.

FaceNiff is an Android app that allows you to sniff and intercept web session profiles over the WiFi that your mobile is connected to.
It is possible to hijack sessions only when WiFi is not using EAP, but it should work over any private networks (Open/WEP/WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK)
It’s kind of like Firesheep for android. Maybe a bit easier to use (and it works on WPA2!).
Even if you’re not interested in this app for educational purposes, it should serve as a reminder to be careful on wireless networks and use SSL whenever necessary. Even WPA2 wireless connections are susceptible to FaceNiff though it does require being connected to the same wireless network.

FaceNiff is available for rooted phones only. You can download the FaceNiff.apk from the FaceNiff site.
Confirmed to work on:
  • HTC Desire CM7
  • Original Droid/Milestone CM7
  • SE Xperia X10
  • Samsung Galaxy S
  • Nexus 1 CM7
  • HTC HD2
  • LG Swift 2X
  • LG Optimus Black – original rom
  • LG Optimus 3D – original rom
  • Samsung Infuse
Supported services:
  • FaceBook
  • Twitter
  • Youtube

How to trace and spy your friends mobile phone live for free ?????

Yes Guys, this is now possible, I’m not joking. Many of us think that this is not possible or we have to spend some money for such services but believe me that we don’t have to spend any money for getting this done. Yes, PhoneOnMap makes it possible. It’s a service that provides a free application that has to be installed in GPS cell phone and you are ready to track the phone from anywhere on the Internet.

This application can be useful for office work as well as family members. You can track your child as well as your girlfriend/wife too, LOL. This PhoneOnMap can be used worldwide and you can use it while traveling too. The data is stored on the company’s server for a period of one month. This can be an invaluable source for sales and marketing department of an organization to track the marketing agents.

If you are worried about the security and privacy of the service, let me tell that it is very secure and your cell phone can not be monitored by any Unauthorized User as in order to access the tracking system, you have to authenticate yourself through a personal code which was used as identification while installing application on cell phone.

Features of GPS cell phone tracking system:

    1. GPS cell phone tracker and locater will not work in the underground transportation.
    2. The application does not work when the phone is turned off.
    3. The data transmission outside provider’s coverage area will add roaming charges like any other phone service charge us.
    4. Once application is uninstalled from cell phone than you can’t do anything.
    5. On internet tracking system will show cell phone location between every 10 seconds to 10 minutes, which is depend on setting.

According to me this kind of service is very important for parents to track their children and from a business usage point of view an invaluable part of companies involved in supply and delivery system like Currier and Home delivery system. This will help them to get a real-time location of the object and provide an accurate time-frame for the delivery.

As of now this service does not provide the exact pin point location but the location determined s in the range of 10-20 meters. However with little intelligence the exact location can be easily determined especially when you wish to track your children or the cheating girlfriend ;)

How to Trace Mobile Number ????????

With the rapid growth of mobile phone usage in recent years, we have often observed that the mobile phone has become a part of many illegal and criminal activities. So in most cases, tracing the mobile number becomes a vital part of the investigation process. Also sometimes we just want to trace a mobile number for reasons like annoying prank calls, blackmails, unknown number in a missed call list or similar.
Even though it is not possible to trace the number back to the caller, it is possible to trace it to the location of the caller and also find the network operator. Just have a look at this page on tracing Indian mobile numbers from Wikipedia. Using the information provided on this page, it is possible to certainly trace any mobile number from India and find out the location (state/city) and network operator (mobile operator) of the caller. All you need for this is only the first 4-digit of the mobile number. In this Wiki page you will find all the mobile number series listed in a nice tabular column where they are categorized based on mobile operator and the zone (state/city). This Wiki page is updated regularly so as to provide up-to-date information on newly added mobile number series and operators. I have used this page many a time and have never been disappointed.
If you would like to use a simpler interface where in you can just enter the target mobile number and trace the desired details, you can try this link from Numbering Plans. Using this link, you can trace any number in the world.
By using the information in this article, you can only know “where” the call is from and not “who” the caller is. Only the mobile operator is able to tell you ”who” the caller is. So if you’re in an emergency and need to find out the actual person behind the call, I would recommend that you file a complaint and take the help of police. I hope this information has helped you!

How to quickly repair your Mobile Phone dropped in water?

Many of you get your mobile phone wet by one way or another. You worry as you mistakenly drop your mobile phone in water. It can also get wet if you are out in a heavy rain. However, there is no need to panic. It is possible to save your wet mobile phone by quickly repairing it. In order to save your mobile phone from water damage, you can consider these easy and simple solutions:

    Act rapidly :

The first thing you have to do in order to save your wet mobile phone is to act rapidly. Quickly remove all the detachable parts as well as covers possible such as the back cover, battery, the SIM card, memory card etc. Next, take a piece of cloth or a tissue paper to wipe the excess water you are able to notice within the mobile phone. Make sure that you dry it completely. If you don' t do this, the water inside the mobile phone will begin to evaporate and gather in places which will be difficult to reach.

This will save your wet mobile phone and it will start working if it was under water for just a little while.

    Using a hairdryer :

Take a hairdryer and begin drying the mobile phone while giving more consideration to the place where the battery is located. The battery housing usually consists of tiny holes to let in air (so giving more space for water) inside the mobile phone.

Make sure that you are not holding the hairdryer very near to the mobile phone. Keeping it too close to the mobile phone may harm the electrical mechanism of the mobile phone. Keep on drying the mobile phone from a safe distance for about twenty to thirty minutes.

If solution number 1 and solution number 2 don't work, try solution number 3.

    Drying for a long time:

Take off the covers as well as battery from the mobile phone. Put the phone in a dry as well as warm place to let the water inside the phone evaporate gradually from the little holes in the mobile phone.
