How to silence a loud video card fan

A few things to note up front – the steps in this tutorial are specific to my video card. If you have a new super-fancy card, you’ll probably have to improvise a bit as they can be almost completely encased in the cooling system/fan(s). And, I apologize in advance for the rather poor quality pictures, my digital camera is… lacking.
  1. To make your video card run quietly, you’ll need the following items:
    1. A normal sized Phillips head screwdriver
    2. A “small” sized Phillips head screwdriver
    3. Ideally, very fine high-grade machine oil. Sewing machine oil worked fine for me.
    4. A hypodermic syringe. If you don’t have one handy, a sewing needle, sharp thumb-tack or push-pin will also work
    5. A loud video card

  2. Turn off your PC. Unplug the power to it. Remove the casing from your computer. Most cases have an “easy access door” on the side, but if you have an older PC you might have to unscrew it from the back.
  3. Use the regular size Phillips head screwdriver to unscrew your video card, and carefully remove it from your PC. Place it face up on a wood or plastic surface (nothing metal).
  4. Use the small size Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the fan onto the heatsink.
  5. Flip the fan over so it’s face-down.
  6. Fill your syringe with a few drops of machine oil (or sewing machine oil). Use the needle to inject a drop or two (no more) through the sticker into the ball-bearing cavity. You might have to poke around a couple of times to find the cavity – you’ll know you’ve hit it when the needle punctures the sticker.
  7. If you don’t have a syringe and you’re using a sewing needle, thumb-tack or push-pin, poke a hole through the sticker. Carefully put one drop of oil on top of the hole, and use the pin to work the oil through the hole into the ball-bearing cavity.
  8. Now place your finger on top of the small hole created by the needle/pin, and spin the video card fan around a few times. This will work the oil into the bearings.
  9. Screw the fan back on to the heatsink, and plug your video card back into your computer. Plug the power back in, and turn it on. Once your card heats up to the point where the fan turns on, it should be running completely silent!

Right Way To Print Your Email : Tip

Whether it is driving directions, a recipe, or an important memo, some e-mail you receive is fit to print. Even though you may have multiple e-mail addresses and multiple ways to access them, printing a message is typically a straightforward process.

When printing from a Web-based e-mail application, use the e-mail application’s print option to create a printer-friendly version of the message. We advise against going directly to your browser’s print command. While this option works for printing other types of Web pages, you will end up printing not only the e-mail message but also the ads, buttons, and other interface elements around it.

Follow the steps below to print from the most popular e-mail applications.

Print With Microsoft Outlook, and Outlook Web App

1. Select the e-mail you would like to print.

2a. In the client application, click File and then Print.

2b. In the Outlook Web app, turn off the right-side viewing pane in the View menu, and double-click the message to open it in a new window. Click the Printable View button at the top of the window.

3. A print dialogue box will pop up. Adjust the settings and print options before you send the job to your printer.

Print With Gmail

Here’s how to print an entire conversation (as Gmail calls an e-mail thread).

1. Open the conversation and click Print all on the right side of the window.

2. After the simply-formatted printable window opens, use your browser’s print command to print.

Here’s how to print a single e-mail.

1. Expand the message within the thread that you’d like to print.

2. Click the down arrow to the right of the Reply button.

3. In the resulting menu, click Print to get a printable window.

4. Print using your browser’s print command.

Print With Yahoo Mail

1. Open the message.

2. Click Print on the toolbar at the top of the window to get a printable version of your message. A print dialogue box should pop up.

3. Adjust the settings and print options before you send the job to your printer.

Print With Hotmail

1. Open the message.

2. Click the Print icon on the toolbar at the top of the window to get a printable version of your message.

3. Adjust the settings and print options before you send the job to your printer.

How to Get Detailed Information About Your Video Card

Using a small and free Windows program, you can get very detailed information about your PC’s video card. Here’s how –
  1. Start out by downloading GPU-Z. It’s an .exe and doesn’t actually need to be installed – so once the download has completed, just double-click it to run it.
  2. Click the Close button when the update window pops up – unless there is in fact an update – in which case you should download it.
  3. The Graphics Card tab is the one that will be displayed by default. From here you can find out everything about your video card – its Name, GPU, Device ID, and far, far more.
  4. Select the Sensors tab. These are the things that can be monitored in (semi) real-time. If you open a ‘graphics heavy’ program, you’ll see the video card usage (Memory Used, Temp etc) increase.
  5. That’s about it. You can keep this program around by storing it somewhere in your Home folder, or move it to your Program Files folder and create a shortcut to it on your desktop

A New Vulnerability In Microsoft Word

Hackers are exploiting a vulnerability in Microsoft Word to plant malware on Windows PCs, Microsoft said this week.

The bug in Microsoft Word 2002, 2003, 2007, and 2010 was patched November 9 as part of Microsoft's monthly security update .

Word 2008 and 2011 for the Mac have also been patched, but Microsoft has not yet issued a fix for the same flaw in the older Word 2004. The circulating attacks affect only Windows versions of the suite, however.

According to the Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC), the group that investigates attack code and issues signature updates for the company's antivirus software, the first in-the-wild exploits were detected last week. According to MMPC the attack is sufficiently dangerous.

The attack uses a malicious RTF (Rich Text Format) file to generate a stack overflow in Word on Windows, said MMPC researcher Rodel Finones. Following a successful exploit, the attack code downloads and runs a Trojan horse on the compromised computer.

Finones said that the code "reliably exploits this [Word] vulnerability."

Last month, Microsoft rated the RTF vulnerability as "critical" in Word 2007 and 2010, but as "important" in all other affected versions.

At the time, outside researchers had put their bets on the bug as a hacker choice because users running Office 2007 or 2010 could be attacked if all they did was preview a specially-crafted RTF document in the Outlook e-mail client.

"Once a [malformed] message hits the Outlook preview pane, remote code can be executed. You should patch this right away," Jason Miller, the data and security team manager for Shavlik Technologies, said on the day Microsoft released the patch.

Finones urged users who have not yet installed the November patch to do so as soon as possible.
More information about the vulnerability can be found in the MS10-087 security bulletin.

The MS10-087 update can be downloaded and installed using Microsoft Update and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

What Is This?

What Is This?

My guess: An alien beacon recently discovered at Llano Chajnantor, 16,450-feet high in the Chilean Atacama desert, 50 kilometers to the east of San Pedro de Atacama. In reality, its name is APEX, and it's a galactic vacuum cleaner.
APEX—the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment—is a collaboration between Max Planck Institut für Radioastronomie, Onsala Space Observatory and the European Southern Observatory to construct and operate a modified ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) prototype antenna as a single dish on the high altitude site of Llano Chajnantor.
Observing with APEX allows us to study cold dust and gas in our own Milky Way and in distant galaxies. Tracing the thermal continuum emission and analyzing high frequency spectral lines improve our understanding of the structure and chemistry of planetary atmospheres, dying stars, regions of star formation as well as distant starburst galaxies. We can address issues from the vast scales of the structure of the Universe down to the physics and chemistry of comets.
There you go, I was right: An alien beacon that looks into starstuff or something. [It's Full of Stars]

XBoot Creates Your Own Custom, Multi-Image Bootable USB Drive

XBoot Creates Your Own Custom, Multi-Image Bootable USB Drive

Windows: If you're tired of managing five or six different live CDs for testing and troubleshooting, free program XBoot will help you merge them all onto one DVD or thumb drive with simple drag-and-drop ease.

I don't know about you, but I've amassed quite a few live CDs over the years that I'd like to keep, like GParted, Ophcrack, and the many flavors of Linux I have lying around. Unfortunately, they always seem to get buried under all the other CDs I have, or left at other people's houses. XBoot does away with the need for all that, creating one bootable USB drive with any ISOs you want on it.

XBoot Creates Your Own Custom, Multi-Image Bootable USB Drive

Unlike other multi-boot methods, XBoot has an extremely simple-to-use interface: you just drag and drop any ISO you want into the list and burn them onto a DVD (or USB thumb drive). What's even cooler is that it has virtualization tool QEMU built-in, so you can test your drive and see what your menus will look like when you use it. It's a great app for anyone doing a lot of troubleshooting or other work requiring live, bootable media, so hit the link to check it out if you fall into that category.

XBoot is a free download for Windows only.

Mobile Mouse Turns Your iOS Device into a Wireless Mouse, Keyboard, and Media Remote

Mobile Mouse Turns Your iOS Device into a Wireless Mouse, Keyboard, and Media Remote

Windows/Mac: Mobile Mouse is a remote control tool for Windows and Mac computers that isn't just a mobile trackpad and keyboard but a remote control with a library of specific application interfaces and an application launcher too.

Mobile Mouse goes beyond the simple touchscreen-as-touchpad design by incorporating additional features such as a keyboard (the keyboard on your iPhone or iPad becomes a wireless keyboard), application launching on the remote computer, accelerometer-based mouse control, and customized media controls (the last two features are only available in the $2.99 Pro version). If you use a lot of media apps on your computer you'll appreciate the huge library of custom media controls available in the Pro version; they've created a keymap for controlling different apps with specific layouts for the major functions of that application.
Mobile Mouse is available as a free and Pro version and requires you install a small helper application on your Mac or Windows PC. Visit the the link below for more information or watch the video above for a detailed demonstration.

Blackberry Will Not Allow India to Access its Encrypted Data

The Blackberry dispute of not accessing its encrypted messages and mails of its users to government intelligence authorities is still unsolved; as recently (on Thursday) it has been reported that Blackberry has denied letting its encrypted data to access to government intelligence agencies.

As per report of sources, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) denied the governments order saying that to access encrypted data was technically not feasible. The report further said that RIM slammed down the report from Delhi- a report which said that Blackberry had agreed to let its encrypted data access to the government intelligence agencies, and said the report was misleading and inaccurate.

The RIM further said that they were co-operating the government and they were not violating the norms of Indian constituency as they were proving the same degree of consumer service as other telecom agencies.

Blackberry, the Canadian wireless giant has informed that in the past that it doesn’t have a ‘master key’ to get a third party access to encrypted corporate data under any circumstances.

Reportedly, RIM has informed that the installation of servers in the country would not serve the purpose as all data remained encrypted at all times through all points of transfer between the BlackBerry enterprise server and client smart phones.

However, they further said that they were working with the Indian authorities for allowing them to access its consumer service, including the Blackberry message service.

Know Which Apps to Remove From MSConfig with This Startup Applications List

Know Which Apps to Remove From MSConfig with This Startup Applications List

One of the biggest slowdowns on a Windows computer is the barrage of applications that start up when you boot Windows. This application list will tell you which of those are safe to remove from msconfig.exe.

If no one in your family got a shiny new Windows PC for Christmas this year, they've already probably roped you in to do some maintenance on their computer, which probably involves heading into MSConfig.

Unfortunately, digging into MSConfig can be pretty daunting, even if you know your way around Windows.
This list of startup applications is a really handy resource for cleaning up msconfig entries that have overtaken old computers. It catalogs tons of different startup programs, what they do, and which ones you should delete, leave running, or decide based on the program's usefulness. It even has a nice search box so you can search through the tens of thousands of entries.
