Hack Google Chrome Web Browser and We Will Award You $20,000 : Google's Challenge For You

For you really tech smart people out there, Google has issued a challenge for you. It's quite simple: Hack Google Chrome Web browser successfully, and they'll give you $20,000 cash and a Chrome CR-48 notebook.

You'll have your work set out for you though. Last year, Google's web browser was the only one left untouched at CanSecWest Pwn2Own hacking contest (yes that is the real name) 2010, ZDNet wrote. This year, they've upped the stakes with the larger cash prize.

The hacks will have to be made to Chrome Web browser's running on the latest 64-bit release of either Windows 7 or Mac OS X. Contest rules state that the hack must “must include a sandbox escape,” which means whatever the hack weakens may be combined with another security flaw that must be written in Google code to cause the whole system to crumble. (Chrome supposedly has built-in sandbox protection. According to PC World, "The sandbox segregates untrusted or potentially malicious scripts so they are unable to impact the core browser, or the underlying PC. Because of the sandbox, it will take some extra effort for an attack against the Chrome Web browser to be considered a success.")

Nokia's Bicycle Charger

Rs. 1,499 charger provides 28 minute talk time for 10 minutes of cycling

Nokia's bicycle charger about which we had reported last year will finally hit India sometime in March this year. The Indian price is set at Rs. 1,499. The nifty little charger works on the tried and tested dynamo based mechanism that has been the de-facto standard for bicycle lights. The bicycle charger is a regular charger attached to a dynamo that draws power from the rotating sidewall of the front wheel.

It gives 28 minutes of talk time for 10 minutes of cycling at speeds between 6 kmph and 50 kmph. The 2mm charger interface is packaged with a Nokia charger, a phone holder and a bottle dynamo. Jatin Kaushik, a sales representative at Nokia, says, "The device is targeted at markets like India, and is bound to do excellently well. The company plans to bring Bicycle accessories including the dynamo charger, by the end of Feb, latest by March this year".

We can't be so sure about the doing well, because of the price that's a good chunk of what an average bicycle costs here. Moreover, the urban Indian population which looks like the target audience for this device might find it to be overpriced. So charging a phone, which is something one does every other day, sounds unviable on a product that won't be used as frequently. We think this most probably will end up as a novelty device with not many takers.

Use Firefox extensions and secured network instead of being ignorant

Firesheep is a simple add-on for Firefox that can let anyone scan through open Wi-Fi network and steal account information of users. Account details of websites like Twitter, Facebook, Yelp, Hotmail and several others can easily procured using this add-on. To protect your account details from getting hijacked by anyone. Here are some pointers shared by Butler to protect users in the simplest possible ways:

• HTTPS-Everywhere Extension: Created by Electronics Frontier Foundation, this add-on makes the Firefox browser use only HTTPS (Secured) connection for certain websites. Unfortunately, this works only with definite list of websites only.
• Force-TLS: Yet another Firefox extension that will let users to specify and create own list of domain names for forcing HTTPS requests.
• Virtual Private Network: Using Virtual Private Networks could be an ideal solution for corporate environment and hardly for a home based user.

These aren't golden solution pointers that will serve the purpose of securing your account details being hijacked over open Wi-Fi. However, they do promise protection against snooping through Firesheep or similar tools. London based user named Kossi Yetongnon commented on this claiming that he was able to hijack Hotmail Session even through a a secured Wi-Fi network. As rightly pointed out, forcing HTTPS encryption won't solve the issue. It's the cookie that gets dumped on the user's computer which needs to be secured. Websites that require secured login should take a note of this and start working on appropriate solutions.

Hate the new Google Docs? Here’s how to get the old layout back.

Google rolled out a update to Google Docs earlier today which includes a new layout, and new functionalities. Most noticeable is the the overall revamp of the layout that offers new sorting options.

It took a bit of inspiration from Gmail’s “Priority Inbox”, and came out with a “Priority Sort” option to highlight the most important documents to your right now.

While it may seem like a great update for the majority, there are still those who find it a bit too complicated for their taste and would very much prefer the old Google Docs layout that is clean, simple and no-nonsense. Good thing we found an easy and simple way to do it:

Hide Folders in Nokia / Java Supporting Phones Without any Software

Have you ever wanted to hide folders in your phone? If yes, here is very interesting solution for you to hide folders in your phone without the need of any software. This trick can be used for phone from Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG or any other company. The only requirement is that your phone should support java.

So, if your phone supports java then here is the trick:

1. Create any new folder or you can use any existing folder that is to be hidden.

2. Rename the folder to any name but with the extension of .jad like if I want to hide my images folder then I will name it as images.jad

3. Now create a new folder with the same name in the same directory but with the extension of .jar So, I would create the folder with the name images.jar

4. And that’s it..!! The original images folder which has been renamed with .jad gets hidden and only folder with.jar extension is visible which is empty. So my data is protected/hidden from unwanted eyes.

Now we have to learn how to open these hidden folders. So here is the way to open these hidden folders in Mobile phones

To unhide the original folder you have to remove the .jar extension from the new folder and your original folder with all the files and with .jad will become visible.

Motorola Defy Officialy Launched in India

Priced at Rs 18,500, resistant to water, shock and dust

Motorola India on Tuesday launched another Android powered mobile phone in the Indian market.

It seems like the company has picked up momentum in recent times and trying to come up strongly after a really bad phase of close to five years. In the recent past Motorola has announced a slew of smartphones-- the Charm, Motorola Quench XT5, FlipOut, Motorola Milestone XT800 Glam and now the Defy, an Android 2.1 run device.

The Motorola Defy aims to offer a different taste to its users as it is a rugged smartphone with water, dust and drop resistant features. Perhaps the first rugged smartphone. But the catch is it does not look like a rugged handled device. Not at all a pain to your eyes.

It features a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen with gorilla glass display, 5 mega-pixel camera with auto-focus and LED Flash, MotoBlur UI and FM radio.

This 3G phone comes with 2GB of internal memory which could be expanded up to 32 GB. As a norm of the time, the Defy links to various social media tools like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.

Use Windows 7 and Vista For 1 Year Without Activation

If all other possible ways to activate Windows has failed, you are left with only one which is to activate windows by phone. What if that also has failed somehow? Here is a nice registry (as well as a command line) trick to postpone Windows activation for 1 year or just to say, use Windows without activating it.

Reset Windows Vista And Windows 7 Activation for 120 days

1. Start Command Prompt. (Press Winkey+R to start Run, type cmd in it and hit enter).

2. Enter the command slmgr –rearm and hit enter.

3. You will be prompted to restart Windows. After restarting, the trial period will be extended for 30 more days.

NOTE : If you are willing to take full advantage (i.e 120 days) perform this trick every 30 days after installation. This trick will work only three times. So, 30days(default) + extended 90(30X3) days makes the extension of 120 days or 4 months.

Reset Windows 7 or Vista Activation For almost 1 year(360 days)

As I mentioned earlier, the slmgr –rearm trick could be used only 3 times. But a registry trick will make it usable for 8 more times i.e (8X30=240days) of Windows use.

1. Open the registry editor in Windows 7 or Vista.(Press Winkey+R to start Run, and then type regedit in it and hit enter).

NOTE : Backup Windows Registry before making changes to it.

2. Go to the following directory using the left pane,

For Windows Vista

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SL

For Windows 7

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

*HKLM stands for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

3. Now in the right pane, you will find a DWORD entry named, SkipRearm. Right click on it and press “Modify”. Change the “Value Data” to 1.

4. Restart your computer to apply the changes. That’s all. Now you can perform the previously mentioned(slmgr -rearm) trick 8 more times.

Therefore the total count of the allowed slmgr –rearm trick is 11 which means an extra of 330 days in addition to the default 30 days. So, you get a 360 days of extension for using Windows 7 or Vista without activating it. You may also like to know how to disable or enable the Windows auto-activation feature.

To prevent a pendrive from infecting trojans or some kind of virus which uses autorun.inf file to execute, just create a blank folder in your pendrive and name it as autorun.inf make it hidden and read only. This trick is sometimes helpful to prevent those kind of viruses or trojans.
